I had to send the first one back because the battery backup didn't work. Beyond that, it is a decent machine without a lot of features. The sound quality is fine and the message is clear when you call up. My only complaint is that it is difficult to erase individual messages. If you just hit "erase" in the middle of the message it won't go away. You have to listen to the whole thing then hit the button at just the right time to get rid of that message. Otherwise you have to either erase all of them or listen again....
